Relocation Checklist

One Month Before Moving | Two Weeks Before Moving | One Week Before Move | Day Before Move | Moving Day

When relocating, there is so much to do! Sometimes it is difficult to figure out what to tackle first. Our moving checklist provides a clear and concise timetable that outlines each step of the process.

ONE MONTH BEFORE MOVING:

  1. Pick up a Change-of-Address Kit from the Post Office and fill out:

    • Friends and family
    • Banks
    • Insurance companies
    • Credit card companies
    • Magazines and newspapers - cancel local newspaper delivery
    • Doctors, dentists and other providers - transfer drug prescriptions
    • Past employer - for W2 forms
  2. Look around the house and consider what you do not want to take with you.

    • Use up perishable foods
    • Sell, donate or hold a garage sale for unwanted items
  3. Prepare a list of large items to be moved.

    • Appliances – Refrigerator, Washer/Dryer, etc.
    • Furniture – Couches, Beds, Entertainment Centers, etc.
    • Outdoor Items – Patio Furniture, Lawn Mower, etc.
  4. Assess the cost and procedure of your move.

    For Full Service moves:
    1. Get written estimates from several moving companies
    2. Will the movers pack for you?
    3. What items won't they move?
    4. Get appraisals of high-value items in case of future claims
     
    For Do-It-Yourself Moves:
    1. Make arrangements for truck rental and moving help
    2. Buy packing supplies (Boxes, Packing and masking tape, Markers, Newspapers, Twine)
  5. Start packing boxes. Mark each box clearly as to its contents and in which room it is to be placed in your new home. Mark "Open First" clearly on boxes containing important items to be unpacked first:

    • Kitchen – Dishes, Pots and Pans
    • Bedroom – Bedding, Pillows and Alarm Clock
    • Bathroom – Towels and toiletries
    • Tools – Hammer, Pliers and Wrench
    • Misc. – Special Toys, Light bulbs and Cleaning supplies
  6. Make arrangements for picking up your important records:

    • Birth Certificate(s)
    • Medical – Physician, Dentist, Optometrist, etc.
    • Legal & Financial
    • School Transcripts – Be sure to get one with a raised seal
    • Veterinarian
  7. Close out your bank accounts and start a new account in your new town:

    • Checking – transfer account from current bank?
    • Savings – transfer account from current bank?
    • Safe Deposit Box
    • Cancel or Adjust direct withdrawals
  8. Contact your child's new school to notify them of your upcoming move to their area.

  9. Contact the Chamber of Commerce in your new town. Request a relocation package.

  10. Check and clear any tax assessments on your current property.

  11. Complete any necessary repairs in your current home and arrange for any repairs in your new home.

TWO WEEKS BEFORE MOVING:

  1. Pack your vital documents in one place:

    • Passports
    • Military records
    • Mortgage records
    • Marriage license
    • Birth certificates
    • Vehicle titles
    • Stock certificates
    • Insurance papers
    • Bank records
    • School records
    • Medical records
    • Tax records
  2. Take care of your utilities:

    • Make arrangements to disconnect your utilities.
    • Get refunds for any deposits made.
    • Have meters read.
    • Give new address for them to send their final bill.
    • Make arrangements to connect utilities at your new residence.
       
      • Electric
      • Water
      • Gas
      • Telephone
      • Trash / Sewer
      • Cable
      • Internet
  3. Make arrangements for cleaning both your old home and new home.

  4. Inquire about your new state's auto licensing procedure and auto insurance rates.

  5. Check with your homeowners insurance company about transferring coverage to your new home.

  6. Arrange to have a sitter watch young children at their house on moving day.

ONE WEEK BEFORE MOVING:

  1. Dispose of or safely drain any flammable items:

    • Lawn mower gas
    • Snow blower gas
    • Paint
    • Aerosol cans
  2. Plan what goes in the car with you:

    • Toys and games for kids
    • Special breakable items or collections
    • Important documents and records
    • Change of clothes and toiletries for your first day
    • Vacuum cleaner - if you need to clean right away
    • First aid kit
    • Food kit with bottled water, cereal, bananas
  3. Make travel arrangements for your pets and plants.

  4. Purchase moving insurance if you have valuable antiques and collections.

  5. Have your car tuned up.

THE DAY BEFORE MOVING:

  1. Defrost, clean and air out your refrigerator.

  2. Clean your stove.

  3. Make sure you have payment ready for the mover. Check your moving company's payment policies.

  4. Purchase traveler's checks for other possible expenses.

  5. Pack your former town's phone book for future correspondence.

  6. Prepare meals to be eaten during your move.

  7. Pick up ice and beverages for moving day.

  8. Get a good night's sleep!

MOVING DAY:

  1. Strip your bed linens.

  2. Show the movers around. Ensure your possessions to be moved are inventoried by them.

  3. Write "subject to further inspection for concealed loss or damage" on the contract when you sign to protect yourself should you find damage while unpacking.

  4. Get all keys together – Old home, new home and vehicles. Put in a safe spot.

  5. Make sure movers have the correct address, phone number and directions. Confirm delivery date and time. Request drivers mobile phone number if possible.

  6. Check every room one last time. Remember closets and cupboards, basement and garage! Ensure all windows and doors are locked.

  7. Many of your moving expenses are tax deductible, so hang on to your receipts. Call the IRS and request Publication 521: "Tax Information On Moving Expenses" to find out which moving expenses you can deduct.
